Outfitting Excellence: Bokgabane and CrisisOnCall’s School Sports Initiative in Gauteng
In the bustling province of Gauteng, a transformation is taking place on school sports fields. A sea of vibrant colors floods the playgrounds as students proudly don new sports uniforms, their enthusiasm palpable. This scene, replicated across dozens of schools in Pretoria and the wider Gauteng area, is the result of an innovative partnership between two seemingly unlikely allies: Bokgabane, a youth sports development charity, and CrisisOnCall, a medical response company.
The “Outfit for Excellence” initiative, launched six months ago, has already provided high-quality sports clothing to over 50,000 students across 100 schools in Gauteng, with a particular focus on Pretoria. But this program is about much more than just new uniforms – it’s about dignity, safety, and opening doors to opportunities that were once out of reach for many of these schools.
“When we first conceptualized this program, we knew we wanted to do something big, something that would have a tangible impact on as many young lives as possible,” explains Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini, founder of Bokgabane. “But we also knew we couldn’t do it alone. That’s when we reached out to CrisisOnCall, and their response exceeded our wildest expectations.”
CrisisOnCall, primarily known for their rapid medical response services, might seem an unusual partner for a sports clothing initiative. However, for Ruan Vermaak, the decision to get involved was an easy one.
“At CrisisOnCall, we’re in the business of saving lives and promoting health,” Vermaak states. “When Bokgabane approached us with this idea, we immediately saw how it aligned with our mission. Proper sports clothing isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about safety, hygiene, and encouraging active, healthy lifestyles.”
The partnership leverages the strengths of both organizations. Bokgabane brings its deep connections within the education sector and its expertise in youth sports development. CrisisOnCall contributes its logistical prowess, financial resources, and health and safety knowledge.

The sports kits provided are not off-the-shelf uniforms. Each set is specially designed with input from sports scientists and health professionals. The materials are breathable and durable, designed to withstand the rigors of intense physical activity and frequent washing. More importantly, they’re designed to prevent injuries and promote proper hygiene.
“Many schools were struggling with inadequate or outdated sports gear,” explains Thembi Khumalo, Bokgabane’s head of program implementation. “This not only restricted movement but also posed safety risks. Proper sports clothing allows for a full range of motion and helps prevent overheating.”
The impact of the program goes far beyond the practical benefits of the clothing itself. For many of these schools, it’s the first time they’ve had proper sports attire for their students, and the effect on school spirit and participation is profound.
Schools involved in the program report higher participation in sports activities and, interestingly, better attendance rates overall. “We’ve seen a marked increase in enthusiasm for sports since the program started,” notes a principal from a participating school in Pretoria. “The students are proud to represent their school in sports events. This pride is carrying over into their academic work as well.”
The collaboration between Bokgabane and CrisisOnCall extends beyond just providing uniforms. Each school in the program also receives a comprehensive first-aid kit and basic training in emergency response, courtesy of CrisisOnCall.
“Sports and physical activity, while incredibly beneficial, do come with some risks,” van der Merwe points out. “By providing first-aid kits and training, we’re empowering these schools to handle minor injuries and emergencies effectively. It’s all part of creating a safer environment for sports activities.”
The program has caught the attention of local and national sports organizations. Several professional sports clubs have begun to take notice of the increased sports activity in schools involved in the initiative, potentially opening up pathways for future talent development.
Moreover, the visibility of the program has inspired other corporations to get involved. Local businesses have started sponsoring individual schools, providing additional resources for sports equipment and facility improvements.
“What Bokgabane and CrisisOnCall have done is show us all what’s possible when we work together,” says a spokesperson from the Gauteng Department of Education. “They’ve set a new standard for corporate social responsibility in our province.”
As the program enters its second phase, there are plans to expand to another 150 schools in Gauteng over the next year. There’s also talk of extending the initiative to include other necessary sports equipment.
“The dream is to level the playing field completely,” Dr. Dlamini shares. “We want every school, regardless of its location or resources, to have the same opportunity to excel in sports. This program is a big step in that direction.”
For CrisisOnCall, this foray into sports development has opened up new avenues for community engagement. The company is now looking at other ways to promote health and safety through sports and physical activity in schools across Gauteng.
“This partnership has shown us the immense impact we can have when we think outside the box,” van der Merwe reflects. “It’s changed the way we view our role in the community. We’re not just here for emergencies – we’re here to actively contribute to the health and wellbeing of our communities in all aspects.”
As the initiative continues to grow, its impact is felt across Pretoria and Gauteng. School sports fields that were once quiet are now alive with activity. The sight of students proudly wearing their school colors during sports activities has become increasingly common.
This is the true power of the “Outfit for Excellence” initiative. It’s not just about sports clothing – it’s about dignity, opportunity, and the transformative power of feeling valued and supported. Through this innovative partnership, Bokgabane and CrisisOnCall are not just outfitting schools; they’re outfitting the future of Gauteng with hope, enthusiasm, and the tools to succeed in sports and beyond.
The success in Pretoria and Gauteng serves as a model for what could be achieved on a national scale. As more schools benefit from this program, the hope is that it will inspire similar initiatives across South Africa, creating a nationwide movement towards better-equipped, safer, and more enthusiastic school sports programs.
