In communities where resources are scarce, talented young athletes often develop their skills on their own — learning from watching television, imitating older players, or simply through trial and error on dusty streets and open fields. While their raw talent is undeniable, the absence of structured, professional coaching means that many never reach their full potential. Bad habits form, injuries go unaddressed, and the tactical understanding that separates good players from great ones never develops.
Bokgabane Sport NPC set out to change that. In December 2024, we officially launched our Specialised Coaching Programme in Alexandra township, one of Johannesburg's most densely populated and underserved communities. The programme represents a significant step forward in our mission to provide world-class sporting opportunities to children who would otherwise never have access to them.
Professional Coaches, Real Results
At the heart of the programme is a partnership with certified, experienced coaches across four major sporting disciplines:
- Rugby — Structured drills focusing on tackling technique, ball handling, set-piece play, and game awareness
- Soccer — Technical skills development including passing, dribbling, positioning, and match strategy
- Athletics — Sprint technique, endurance training, field events, and competition preparation
- Netball — Footwork, shooting accuracy, defensive positioning, and team play coordination
Each coach brings years of experience working at school, provincial, and in some cases national level. They understand not only the technical demands of their sport, but also the unique challenges faced by young athletes growing up in communities like Alexandra.
Weekly Sessions, Lasting Impact
The programme runs weekly sessions throughout the school term, providing consistent, structured training that allows children to develop progressively over time. Since launching, over 120 children have registered for the programme — and that number continues to grow as word spreads through the community.
"These children have more heart and hunger than many players I have coached at elite level. All they needed was someone to show them the way. The talent here is extraordinary — it just needs direction."
— Programme Head Coach
Sessions are designed to be more than just sport-specific training. Each session incorporates elements of:
- Technique development — Building proper fundamentals from the ground up
- Physical fitness — Age-appropriate conditioning, flexibility, and injury prevention
- Life skills — Teamwork, discipline, respect, communication, and leadership
- Mentorship — One-on-one guidance from coaches who serve as positive role models
Building From the Ground Up
For many of the children in the programme, this is the first time they have received formal coaching of any kind. Some arrived without shoes. Others had never held a proper rugby ball. But the transformation has been remarkable. Within weeks, coaches reported significant improvements in technique, confidence, and attitude — both on and off the field.
The programme also creates a safe, structured environment for children after school hours. In a community where many young people are vulnerable to negative influences, having a positive space to channel their energy is invaluable. Parents have reported that their children are more focused on their schoolwork, more disciplined at home, and more optimistic about their futures since joining the programme.
"Quality coaching changes everything. It is the difference between a child who plays sport and a child who becomes an athlete. Our goal is to give every child in this programme the same foundation that privileged academies provide — because talent does not care about your postcode."
— Ruan Vermaak, Executive Director
Bokgabane Sport plans to expand the Specialised Coaching Programme to additional communities in 2025, with the aim of reaching 500 children by the end of the year. We are also working to establish inter-community tournaments where children from different programme locations can compete against each other, building experience and exposure in a competitive environment.
