Education is the single most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty. Yet across South Africa, thousands of talented, capable students are forced out of school every year — not because they lack the ability to learn, but because their families cannot afford the fees. For these children, the classroom door is closed before they ever get the chance to walk through it.

Bokgabane Sport NPC believes that no child should be denied an education because of financial circumstance. That is why, at the start of this academic year, we stepped forward to pay school fees in advance for 13 students who were at risk of being excluded from school.

Lindiwe's Story

Lindiwe Mbatha is a bright, determined 16-year-old who dreams of becoming a doctor. She excels in her science and mathematics classes, and her teachers describe her as one of the most dedicated students they have ever taught. But Lindiwe's family has been struggling. Her mother works as a domestic helper, earning barely enough to cover food and rent. School fees were simply out of reach.

"I was told I could not come back to school if my fees were not paid. I did not know what to do. I kept studying at home, hoping something would change. When Bokgabane said they would pay, I could not believe it."
— Lindiwe Mbatha, Age 16

Lindiwe's situation is not unusual. Across our communities, countless students face the same heartbreaking choice: give up on education, or watch their families sink further into debt. Bokgabane refuses to accept either outcome.

A Partnership With Three Schools

Working closely with three schools in the Pretoria area, Bokgabane Sport identified 13 students whose families could not afford school fees for the year. Our team met with each family, school administrators, and the students themselves to understand their needs and ensure the support would be comprehensive.

For each of the 13 students, Bokgabane covered:

More Than Just Fees

Paying school fees is about more than keeping a child enrolled. When a student arrives at school properly uniformed, with the right books, and without the stress of unpaid accounts hanging over them, their entire experience changes. They can focus on learning instead of worrying. They can participate fully instead of sitting on the sidelines. They can hold their heads high among their peers.

The 13 students supported by this programme represent a cross-section of young South Africans with enormous potential. Among them are aspiring engineers, nurses, teachers, and athletes. Several are also part of Bokgabane's sports programmes, where they are developing their physical abilities alongside their academic ones.

"When you invest in a child's education, you are not just changing one life — you are changing a family, a community, and a generation. These 13 students carry the hopes of hundreds of people on their shoulders, and we are honoured to lighten that load."
— Ruan Vermaak, Executive Director

Looking Ahead

Bokgabane Sport is committed to expanding this programme in the years ahead. Our goal is to partner with additional schools and increase the number of students we support annually. We are also exploring mentorship and tutoring programmes to complement the financial support, ensuring that each student has the best possible chance of academic success.

Every donation to Bokgabane Sport helps make initiatives like this possible. The cost of keeping one child in school for a year may seem small in isolation, but for the families we serve, it represents the difference between hope and despair, between opportunity and exclusion.
